Research team
Konstantinos Vadikolias (MD, Ph.D.) is currently working at the Democritus University of Thrace, Neurology Department. Vadikolias has 172 publications with 3000 citations (ResearchGate, 20 December). Vadikolias’s skills and expertise include stroke and neurological and cerebral ischemia, and their research field is focused on transcranial Doppler ultrasonography, modified Rankin scale, acute stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, ischemic stroke, stroke (engine), confidence intervals, odds ratios, incidence (geometry), and cardiology.
Dr Dimitrios Tsiptsios graduated from the American College of Thessaloniki, Greece in 1996. He gained his Degree in Medicine from the Medical School of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece in 2004 and completed his PhD thesis at the same institute on the topic “Pupillometry in Myasthenia Gravis” in 2008. From 2008 to 2010 he specialized in the field of Epilepsies and Clinical Neurophysiology at St Thomas’ Hospital, London, UK under the guidance of Prof Koutroumanidis and Prof Panayiotopoulos. He trained in Neurology at Papageorgiou General Hospital, Thessaloniki, Greece and became Neurology Specialist in 2014. He concluded the “Sleep Medicine MSc” held by Democritus University of Thrace, Greece in 2017. From 2014 to 2020 he worked as Consultant Clinical Neurophysiologist at South Tyneside & Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust. Since 2021 he works as Postdoctoral Rerearcher at the Neurology Department of Democritus University of Thrace, Greece.
Dr Chrysostomos Bairaktaris MD PhD Neurologist graduated of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Department of Medicine and SSAS ( Corps Officers Military Academy) June 1991. I was trained in Neurology at the 2nd University Clinic of AHEPA Hospital where I received the title of Neurologist in May 1998. I prepared my doctoral dissertation at the Democritus University of Thrace from July 2003 to September 2006 on the subject: “Investigation of extrapyramidal diseases with the method FP-CIT SPECT (DAT-SCAN)” under the supervision of Associate Professor of Neurology Ms. Ch Piperidou and I was awarded a Doctorate from the Medical School of DUTH with a grade of “excellent” on October 25, 2006. From September 1991 until April 2011, I served in various positions in primary, secondary and tertiary health care structures in units and Hospitals of the Greek Army and the National Health System. Since September 1998 I have been practicing medicine in parallel with the hospital employment in the private sector. I have participated in many Greek and International conferences with presentations and as a speaker at round tables. At the same time, I have participated in research papers, international research protocols and in the writing of publications in Greek and International journals. I have experience in the training of trainee doctors and undergraduate students in the Department of Medicine of the DUTH and the Department of Medicine of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens UoA.
Paschalina Bebeletsi is a graduate of the Department of Physiotherapy of the University of Thessaly. She has postgraduate studies in the Medical School of the Democritus University of Thrace in Stroke. She has been working in the National Health System of Greece, for the last 15 years, having clinical experience in the whole range of patients who are treated in a University General Hospital with full development of all specialties, while she has worked as a freelancer for the past 5 years. She was a research associate of the Society of Social Psychiatry & Mental Health. For the last two (2) years she has been teaching at the Center for Lifelong Learning of the University of Thessaly in the Department of Physiotherapy in the program “ICU Physiotherapy”. She has participated in many conferences as a speaker and in several cardiovascular and respiratory physiotherapy rehabilitation seminars as an instructor. She is a member of the PSF and the scientific department of Cardiovascular, Respiratory and ICU Physiotherapy Rehabilitation. Her research interests are related to the rehabilitation of critically ill patients in the ICU, Physiotherapy and rehabilitation after Stroke as well as the early rehabilitation of orthopedic surgical-neurosurgical patients.
Nikolaos S. Arikidis was born in Athens, Greece, in 1974. He received the BSc (1997) in Medical Instrumentation Technology from Technological Educational Institute (TEI) of Athens, Greece, the Diploma (2022) in Biomedical Engineering from University of West Attica, the MSc (1999) in Biomedical Engineering Instrumentation from University of Dundee, UK, and the PhD (2009) in Medical Physics from University of Patras, Greece. He worked as a researcher (2013-2015) at «ΣΥΝΕΡΓΑΣΙΑ 2011» (Φ.Κ. D.719), Department of Medical Physics, University of Patras, Greece. He is currently Director of Technical Department at the University General Hospital of Alexandroupolis. He is the author or coauthor of 13 articles in international-refereed journals, 18 international conference papers and co-authored in 2 book chapters at internationally published scientific books.
Dr Christos Bakirtzis is a neurologist. Ηe holds a master degree in Social Psychiatry from Democritus University of Thrace and a PhD from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He currently works in the second Dep. of Neurology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki with clinical , teaching and research duties. His academic interests include neuropsychology, neuroimaging and neuroimmunology.
She has received a degree in Psychology from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2004 and continued her PhD in the Department of Medicine at the Democritus University of Thrace, which she successfully accomplished it in 2012. She then carried out her postdoctoral research in the same department with funding from the State Scholarship Foundation (IKY). She is continuing her postdoctoral research in the field of stroke. At the same time, she has completed her training at the Systemic Institute of Thessaloniki. She has clinical experience as a psychologist and neuropsychologist and teaching experience as an academic scholar at the Democritus University of Thrace in undergraduate and postgraduate courses, as a scientific associate at the ASPAITE faculty, as well as at the Scientific College of Greece. Her main research interest focuses on studies of neuropsychological functions in neurological diseases. She is a founding member of the Hellenic Alliance for Stroke and a national representative in the Stroke Alliance for Europe, as well as a member of the Hellenic Neuropsychological Society.
Dr. Charalampos Papadopoulos is a Molecular Biologist, PhD in Biochemistry, holder of a Master’s Degree in Clinical Pharmacology. For his PhD thesis on the immunometabolic role of erythrocytes in metabolic steatohepatitis, he received a grant from the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation. At the same time, he worked as a young researcher in a funded program of the Research-Create-Innovate action to study the immunometabolic properties of innovative foods. After fulfilling his military obligations in 9/2022, he works as an adjunct lecturer of Biochemistry in the department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, D.U.Th. At the same time, he is working as a postdoctoral fellow in the program: Correlations of neuroimaging, neurophysiological and biomechanical biomarkers in stroke rehabilitation. His research focuses on elucidating the role of the red blood cell in the etiopathogenesis of cerebrovascular events. His studies have led to 17 articles in prestigious international scientific journals.
Karatzetzou Stella graduated from the Medical School of the Faculty of Health Sciences of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. She completed her postgraduate studies and has a Master in the scientific field “Stroke” by Democritus University of Thrace. Furthermore, she completed her 1-year mandatory rural service, before working as a general doctor in a psychiatric-geriatric clinic within the city of Kozani. Moreover, she fulfilled a semester abroad during ERASMUS studies in Leipzig, Germany, as well as participating in translating some chapters of foreign language scientific books of neurologic interest in the Greek language. Also, she developed some social action in the form of offering medical services and provided voluntary work. She attended numerous medical conferences and took active part both in writing and editing scientific articles. From Oktober 2021 she is a PhD candidate in Medical School of the Faculty of Health Sciences of the Democritus University of Thrace and from June 2022 she is a Neurology resident in second neurologic department of AHEPA Hospital in Thessaloniki.
Eleftherios Stefas is a doctor specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation. After completing his studies in medicine, he specialized in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the National Rehabilitation Center in Athens since 2014. He holds a master’s degree from the Kapodistrian University of Athens with a thesis entitled “disorders in the musculoskeletal system of athletes”. He is a member of many Greek and foreign medical associations as well as the author of many articles in Greek and international medical journals and books. He has participated in scientific papers at international and Greek conferences as well as in European research protocols. He has been working at the Evexia Rehabilitation Center since 2014 and has been a scientific associate of the neurosurgery clinic of ACHEPA since 2019 as he participates in the teaching of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation course at the Faculty of Medicine of the AUTH. For many years he was a doctor at the Hellenic Handball Federation and has offered his medical services to several of the departments of the Iraklis Thessaloniki club.
She received a degree in Psychology from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2010 and accomplished her postgraduate studies in the 3-year program “Clinical Neuropsychology”, in the Department of Medicine at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, in 2013. She participated in researches regarding language disorders after stroke and Parkinson’s Disease. She worked in the Municipality of Lemnos, where she started a “Dementia Counceling Center” with the collaboration of Hellenic Healthy Cities Network, completing – for the same purpose – her internship in the Day Care Centre of Alzheimer Hellas “Saint Helen”, in Thessaloniki. She trained on The Integrated Healthcare System Long Lasting Memories Care (LLM Care), Medical Physics & Digital Innovation Lab, School of Medicine Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. She has clinical and professional experience as a neuropsychologist and psychotherapist too. Since October of 2021 she works in the Day Care Center for Patients with Dementia, Department of Neurology, University Hospital of Alexandroupolis. She is, also, PhD student in Neurosurgical Clinic of DUTH and the topic of her thesis is “Perioperative neuropsychological investigation in brain tumors”.
